YMCA College of Business Studies, Jinja
From inception in April 1963, Vocational Education and Training were conducted on adhoc basis in the areas of Secretarial Studies, Catering, Bookkeeping, Tailoring, Music, Dance and Drama, Accountancy and Literacy among others. The training targets the youths because it gave them employable skills that they could use to earn a living. Others on completion of the course, got employment with factories and business institutions in and around Jinja and other parts of Uganda.
Many of the graduates of the center got employed both with the government and industries in Jinja and other towns in Uganda in the different fields they trained in. The skills and knowledge acquired also contributes to the well being of self, family and the community they live in.
From 1994, concerted efforts were made to restructure the Vocational Education and Training programme in terms of curriculum content, staffing, methodology and certification awarded on completion of a course. Focus was placed on the suitable training equipments and their adequacy, facilities and the course duration. The restructured courses of the Vocational Education and Training in YMCA Jinja include skills Development like Typewriting, Short hand, Accountancy, Statistics, Book keeping and Tailoring. Others are Catering and Home Economics, Nursery Teacher Education, business related subjects, driving school, Computer studies and Office Management.
These are all conducted at both Certificate and Diploma level.
